Living in an urban environment, nature is often absent.  By creating art that brings a reflection of nature to sterile and industrial atmospheres, I try to find a balance between the two.  Through the expression of this juxtaposition, the viewer becomes aware of the lack of natural spaces.  Most important by recreating nature within its void, I reflect on my unnerving concern with overdevelopment.  By being able to voice these concerns, I hope to bring a consciousness to society that in return will enable change.

Nature has always been the root of my exploration.  Sourcing from nature I find an immediate correlation to the body, specifically the womb. The womb not only becomes the center foundation from which my work is developed, it is used as a vehicle to create connections between the self and the outside world.  Through the use of fragile and delicate materials, such as wax, latex and Japanese papers, I further push the womb as a theme.

My approach is highly enhanced through the use of texture, layering and translucencies, creating not only imagery, but utilizing a sense of space to evoke an emotion response.  Within my body of work, I constantly find myself exploring textile elements.  Which I am drawn to due to their movement and fluidity, and most of all their connection to “women’s work,” speaks directly to me.  The use of light as a subject and material is an area I return to often.  Its ability to add atmosphere and create a constant changing dialog between my materials, further pushes my desire to engage all of the viewer’s senses.

Both metaphorically, and at times physically, the work I create envelope the viewer.  By using the forest and the womb as universal symbols, I create a setting where the viewer can go to reflect and find their own sanctuary.  In nature I find hope, and escape from a world full of despair and futility.  The forest is the place I begin, and from there I reach out and discover the answers.
